When in the Greenville, South Carolina area, one big local attraction is the city’s professional ice hockey team, the Greenville Swamp rabbits. The team competes in the South Division of the Eastern Conference of the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL). Home games are played at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena located in downtown Greenville. The team plays a 72-game schedule starting in the middle of October and spanning through the end of March. Approximately half of the team’s games are played at their home arena.
The team was founded in 1987 as part of the All-American Hockey League. Until 2010, the team was known as the Johnstown Chiefs. The team moved to Greenville following the 2009 – 10 season and changed its name to the Greenville Road Warriors. The team again changed its name in 2015 in a rebranding effort centered around the local Swamp Rabbit Trail. The rebranding effort is an effort to make the Swamp Rabbits Greenville’s team’ after being embraced by the Greenville community as they have since the team relocated to Greenville.
The Greenville Swamp Rabbits Hockey team’s colors are navy blue, orange, gold, silver, and white. The mascot is an eye-catching golden brown rabbit with a blue helmet and hockey stick. Brian Gratz is the team’s current head coach. Bretton Cameron is the team’s captain. Chris Lewis is the general manager and Fred Festa owns Greenville Swamp Rabbits Hockey.
Greenville Swamp Rabbits Hockey recently announced that its affiliation agreement with the New York rangers has been extended through the 2017-18 season. The Swamp Rabbits are the primary AA affiliate to the Rangers and many of the players on the Greenville team are being developed in the hopes that they can move up to the next level and play for the Rangers.
The Greenville Swamp Rabbits are also an affiliate of the Hartford Wolfpack, an American Hockey League team; this team is the top affiliate team to the New York Rangers.
In addition to individual game tickets, the team also sells season tickets and group tickets for groups of 15 or more. The arena also features a birthday party zone in which kids can celebrate their birthday with the team at a game. Greenville Swamp Rabbits Hockey also has a kid’s club to engage their young fans. Furthermore, the team is very active in the community, collecting donations for various local charity events, hosting youth hockey, and participating in various school programs.
